WHY LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE?

Learning a second language not only provides the benefits of being more competitive in a global economy, but research shows that learning Spanish also improves reading, vocabulary and comprehension in English. In addition, learning Spanish has been shown to improve math abilities.  Learning a second language is amazingly stimulating for the brain and may help a child’s development in many social and academic areas. Studies have shown that becoming bilingual improves the mind's executive function. Children who can speak two languages are also better at:

• Solving problems

• Concentrating

• Multitasking

• ​Planning

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD TO LEARN SPANISH?

There are several ways to get started, as a parent you can start introducing Spanish through: 

• Songs and nursery rhymes 

• Tutors or nannies

• Picture cards

• Spanish television or videos for kids (Netflix has a big collection of cartoons in Spanish)

Learning Spanish is personally enriching, gives insight into other cultures, and is an advantage in almost all careers. If you decide to introduce Spanish to your child, remember that learning another language needs to be fun – otherwise, it is hard to stay committed. You need to celebrate their small achievements as they progress, and be ready to encourage them when they have an inevitable setback.
